I use MPACK/MUNPACK, and for a message to be extracted, there is no requirement
for the file name to end in .mme.  MUNPACK works on files whose name ends in
.MSG, and presumably many other extensions.  I think it even works on a news
message with MIME attachments.  I see only a few of those, having not yet
ventured into binary newsgroups.

I think Arachne includes uuencode and uudecode?
