I recently tried to install FreeDOS (mini) on an old 486. I was
unable to format the 170 mg hardrive or successfully complete the
install program. What I ended up doing was to unzip the external
commands manually (base1.zip) to a DR-DOS formatted partition
and boot from the FreeDOS boot floppy. You should be able to do
something like this without "losing" msdos.

I haven't used it all that much yet, but have had a few crashes
(heap corrupt) requiring a cold reboot. From previous experience
with FreeDOS, I would not recommend giving it access to a large
(>500mg) hardrive.
