Hi, Clarence,

Try "uname -a". Gives kernel and machine information. Here is the
output for the machine I am using right now:

"Linux med-physio11.bu.edu 2.2.19-6.2.1 #1 Mon Apr 9 22:52:58 EDT
2001 i586 unknown"

If it is Redhat box, there might be a startup message in
/etc/issue. Try "less /etc/issue". Here is mine:

"[\l] Red Hat Linux release 6.2 (BU Linux 6.2bu1.1 Caribou)
Kernel 2.2.19-6.2.1 on an i586"

I am not sure where such a message might be for other Linux
distributions.

Best regards
