To "scope out" is a term used by hunters in the US. Perhaps the
term is used also in some other English speaking countries. It means
to survey and examine with a riflescope for the purpose of making
positive identification of a possible target, so as to to
distinguish a doe from a buck, for example. In wooded areas it is
sometimes difficult to make the distinction from a distance without
the aid of binoculars or a telescope. The game laws may prohibit
the taking of does or even the taking of bucks having very few
antlers. Hence the need to "scope out" a possible target. To
"scope out" is not the same as to "take aim". One "takes aim" only
after he has made the decision to fire.
In my alluding to the identification of computer virii I have used
the familiar hunting term because computer virii are targets that
need to be searched for and even scrutized in some cases. Any files
which can be positively identified as viruses should of course be
killed.

Sam
