Hello everyone! (especially those experiencing difficulties connecting
through a modem :-)

My ISP has two phone numbers to connect to:
One of those (intended to be used for connection speeds up to 33600) acts
just like Glenn described above. Now its usage is not encouraged anymore
and they intend to discontinue it. Anyway, lately I was experiencing lots
of trouble using it (busy lines, carrier breakdowns, slow traffic).
The other one works nicely up to 56k, but the login procedure used to be
quite different in the past. (quoting from memory)
username: dhptech
Password
dial-gw5> ppp
{at this point appeared some blurb about PPP and Ethernet something, then
the PPP specific undecipherable sequences of characters. After a short
while the connection was terminated without any error message.)
No need to mention that I *was* pressing F7 at the right moment when
working with Arachne. Moreover, the terminal login was also unsuccesful
when using Trumpet Winsock, Linux wvdial and even win98 ie4 dialer with the
terminal login option activated.
Wvdial man page (Linux) states the following:
" Apparently there are ISP's that actually
give you a login prompt, but work only if you start
PPP, rather than logging in. Go figure. "
It seems that my ISP finally corrected this anomaly. Nowadays, when
calling this number, the PPP sequences appear imediately, and no login
prompt is issued anymore.
The only solution is to disable the terminal login feature in arachne.cfg,
or to uncheck the "show terminal" box on the dialer page. This way, the ppp
driver is loaded right after the modem sees the carrier, and does a PAP
login. This login procedure is automated. The user does not interact in any
way with it.
