Use your providers SMTP server.
Maybe it is sufficient to use POP before SMTP.
Freemail providers must ensure somehow, that only valid users can use
their SMTP server.
The problem is that SMTP itself contains no authentification, and that many
programs don't understand authenticated SMTP (including arachne :(( )
Freemailers can't use IP ranges, bevause you can log on from any provider.
So IMHO you log in to the pop server, and than access is granted from your
IP to the SMTP server for some limited amount of time.
