I've had up to five different versions of Arachne installed at the
same time in differently named directories. I called them: arachne1,
arachne2, arachne3 and so on. This is no problem. 

You don't need a utility to change directory names.  Just use the
DOS command "Rename" or create a new directory with the name you want
and copy the arachne archive there and unpack it.

Then you have to make sure that whatever version of Arachne you are
using is looking to the right places for its constituent parts.

No need to get distraught. Just be consistent and you shouldn't have
a problem.
