Taking it one small chunk at a time makes it
manageable. No, you'll never learn everything
there is, but then you'll not be interested in
everything there is either.

When I was switching from the Commodore 64 to
MS-DOS 5.0, I felt the same way.

You don't really have to dive in all at once.
You can just stick a toe in to begin with.
Either dual-boot between DOS and Linux, or get a
throwaway computer (or a $10-$25 ebay special) and put
Linux on that.

  I got a 486DX2-66VLB for $10. It's had FreeBSD 4.4 on
it, Engarde Linux and Red Hat 6.2. It's my "play"
computer. I highly recommend one for everybody.
(No, I couldn't put Mandrake or even RH 7.1 on it,
but it's a pretty good toybox just the same)
