Have you tried any other printer to see if it works with your Linux
configuration?

If the answer is "yes" and, furthermore, it worked, then you're stucked
with a winprinter.

I  know nothing  about USB on Linux. If the printer is connected to a
parralel port, you should check if either parport module or ppdev module
is loaded (depending on your kernel version). See the files in /proc.

When setting up Linux on my computer, getting my printer to work was the
toughest job :-) I own an older Mannesmann-Tally MT-83 (24 pins).
