During configuration of X with the program xf86config (lower case!)
you will be asked whether you want the virtual screen exeed the real
screen. So you can get the whole 800x600 picture even with VGA16,
but you can see only 640x480 pixels of it and have to move
permanently with the mouse. Freecell, however, can run that way.
