Being of a curious nature, I tried the above using RH5.1.
First I searched for .xinitrc and it was not found.
So I simply typed the command at the root prompt.

There was some activity followed by what appeared to
be a new console because I was asked to login again.

I tried again, this time omitting the "exec" and this time I saw the
error message. Something like: Unable to initialize display.

I sure wish I could remember these things more accurately, but suffice
to say it didn't know how to light up my screen.

Any suggestions to an experimenter ?
