  GUI login?  What's that?  KDE? 
If you get a nonresponsive prompt, that's not good news.  
Try ALT-CTRL-F2 and see if you get a real prompt.
  Then, look at /etc/inittab to see what runlevel you're 
starting up in.  You may have changed this using some kind 
of GUI tool as a subconcious desire to dabble with the red 
pill.  This can be dangerous... yet enlightening.  If you 
have truly made the commitment to take the red pill, then 
ensure you have this line:
id:3:initdefault:

  If you wish to go back to the world of illusion, take
the blue pill.  You can accomplish this by ensuring the
above line contains a "5" in place of the "3".  This 
not take you completely back to your previous state, 
but it is the first step on the journey back.
