Nope. I've got "Multitasking No" So that's not the problem. 

I tried the "right click, reload and back" technique and was able
to grab the image in question. Sometimes they just don't load
the first time around. The problem comes and goes and I've never
been able to discern any consistency.

These might be rare secondary causes but something else is going on
most of the time. Beats me.

I'm using 1.70r3 and when the red square shows up it shows up even
before the jpeg to BMP conversion. You can have fifteeen images on
the page and one or two will be red sqaures and the rest will load
and convert sucessfully. The problem is not site dependent because
you'll get different squares on the same page at different times
even though all the files are there and seem to download ok.
