Hello Arachnians:

They say that nobody "owns" the internet. This may be so. I don't
know.

However, isn't there something called a "root" server that sits at
the very top of some gigantesque pyramidal structure constructed
from all the building blocks of the various "domains"? Would not
this so-called "root" server ultimately have the power to control
and administrate all other servers tied into the system?

If that describes somewhat how the system is set up, then somebody
or some organization has to "own" the root server, and the root
server has to be located in some country.

My question is who owns and controls the root server, and where is
this server located?

Also I have another question:
Would it be theoretically possible for a "mutiny" or a "coup" to be
to be organized among the leaders of the various domains to overthrow
the server at the top and to install a new root server?

And another question:
Is there some kind of "line of succession" established to provide for
continuing operations of the internet in case the root server "dies"
while in office?

I'm not plotting anything. I'm just wondering. I hope the paranoids
won't turn me in to the secret agents who are out to get me.
