Howard:

I used to have all the same problems as you describe when using
PC-PINE for DOS, whether version 3.91 or version 3.96. The same
problems would occur regardless of whether I used LSPPP or EPPPD.
Since switching to another IMAP server I haven't had these problems.
I am now using the imap server "imap.myrealbox.com" and I am using
"smtp.myrealbox.com" for sending mail. You can sign up for the free
service at "http://www.myrealbox.com";. BTW, this service also works
with the Arachne InSight mailer if you set it up for their POP3 server,
"mail.myrealbox.com". You can even use Arachne for the sign-up
process. I find that LSPPP works just as well for me as EPPPD. The
advantage of LSPPP is that it easier to set up and it uses less memory.
So far I have not observed the reported "memory leak" problem. I have
been finding that PC-PINE frequently cannot contact the server
"imap.myrealbox.com", but whenever it does find it, it always
establishes a very good connection and I no longer suffer with any of
the problems like those you have described. Sometimes I use LSPPP
for PC-PINE and sometimes I use EPPPD. No problem with either packet
driver. Maybe your problem has something to do with the servers you
are using. When I switched to another set of servers the problem went
away. Formerly I used the imap server "mail.subdimension.com" with
the smtp server provided by my ISP, "smtp.shentel.net". (BTW IMAP is no
longer running on Subdimension's servers. They now offer only POP3
service and webmail service and they are now thinking about either
discontinuing POP3 service altogether, or offering POP3 only as a
"premium" for fee service. I have always found their POP3 service
generally very reliable and dependable and having very few and very
short down times. I still use their POP3 service quite frequently.
Their webmail service no longer works with Arachne, but it does work OK
with Window$ browsers. Quite surprisingly I get only a very few spams
at my email address at "Subdimension.com", even though this is the email
address that I use openly and un-munged for public postings in
newsgroups. I get more than fifteen times as many spams at Shentel and
I never use my Shentel email address for newsgroup posts. That's
strange!

Sam Heywood
