Of all the web-based email services I've looked at so far, the one
that seems to work best with Arachne is

http://fastmail.fm

Basic service is free. Additional features are available for a
price.

Until recently, the webmail interface of Novell's myrealbox.com
worked pretty well with Arachne also. It's still very good for
reading msgs, but sending no longer works. MRB also offers pop3/smtp
access that is compatible with Arachne. smtp requires
"authentication", but if you fetch your mail with pop3, you should be
able to send outbound email for a short time afterwards. Or you can
use your ISP's own smtp host.

On fastmail.fm, pop3 service is one of the optional services that
costs extra. Surprisingly, IMAP service is free--but that doesn't
help with Arachne.

(Yes, Virginia, there is an IMAP client for DOS: PC-Pine.)
