Hello:

Does anyone know if MSN.COM is a pseudo-ISP like AOL?
I have heard that MSN.COM is just a pseudo-ISP.

The reason I am asking is that my son, who is in the USMC, does a
lot of travelling and temporary duties in different places, and he
is thinking about subscribing to MSN.COM because that ISP offers a
lot of local access numbers for almost everywhere in the US. I
have already told him about "Access-4-free.com", but unfortunately
that ISP doesn't have any local access numbers for Camp Lejeune, NC,
which is his home base where he is normally stationed.

I have just finished installing on his computer a real modem and
Caldera Open Linux and BasicLinux and Arachne and Nettamer. Also
I fixed it up with a dual-boot loader for selecting between Caldera
Open Linux and Windows$ 98. On his Windows 98 partition I installed
Opera 6.03. All systems work fine on "shentel.net", which is a real
ISP. BTW, most of the techies at Shentel don't even know that they
are running a real ISP. They think their system supports only Window$!

Opera runs much faster than MSIE in Window$, and Linux NetScape
Communicator, version 4.51 seems to run faster than either of the
above. I know that DOS Arachne would outrun all three of them if I
were to have installed her into a ramdrive. My son has a Pentium 333.

If my son were to try to connect to MSN.COM, would anyone know if he
would have problems getting on with good software or with good
operating systems? Do you think that MSN.COM would give him a hard
time about his trying to use good operating systems or good browsers
or good email client software instead of using Micro$oft software? I
should certainly hope that he would not feel forced to use Micro$oft
software. Of course we are all very much aware of the
anti-competitive practices of Micro$oft.

If anyone knows of people who have had problems in trying to get it on
with MSN.COM by using good software and good operating systems, please
let me know about it. I need to advise my son.

TIA,

Sam Heywood
