Communist North Korea is a brutally repressive dictactorship and
desperately poor, unable to feed itself or keep the lights on.

South Korea is a western oriented democracy with a robust economy.

All of Korea suffered tremendously under Japanese military occupation
and during the long conflict that followed.

Due to its extreme poverty North Korea has softened somewhat in the
last ten years. The rulers of North Korea are desperate to remain
in power.
