How many people would openly admit to making or losing money in an illegal business? I don't know of any way we can conduct any competent research to investigate the profitability of this kind of business. In the case of a chain letter we can figure the statistical potential for its success only if we know how far down in the chain we are dangling and only if we can make correct guesses about how many recipients on the links further down on the chain will participate.
