Thank you, Christian,

I'll add that to my to-do list, even though it doesn't fit within the
timeframe and, for example, Firefox is one of the GTK apps that doesn't
have any problems at all on my install.

Ralf,

I was going to bring the fontconfig 2.17->2.18 update up as a possibility, but wasn't sure enough it was related.

There was a fairly big write-up on the openSUSE developers (factory) list. The change was to which default fonts are used. 2.17 prior would use the MS fonts, if found on the system, 2.18 change that behavior and switched to libreXXXX fonts.

This was causing apps to look terrible, but I can also see it injecting delay if it is spinning away trying to find a font-match that doesn't exist. It even led to crashes in Firefox.

The two threads were "Tumbleweed snapshot 20260605 - problem with fontconfig?"[1] and "TW 20260609 fontconfig/libfontconfig1 problems continue"[2]
