I was catched by such problem before, I find out to be a problem with glx or 
hardware acceleration part of xorg configure,  disabling such part can fix it, 
but the root I didn't dig into since I got TuxRacer running smoothly again 
after I reinstall the whole system, what a magic.
TuxRacer currently runs smoothly under xorg 6.8.2 on my system.
