your problem sounds like the upgrade problem, i described in kde wiki.

Package upgrade:
Hint on update from kde 3.3 to kde 3.4:
due to a pacman bug please deinstall kde 3.3 first before you install kde 3.4,
else you may get strange side effects.
'pacman -Rd kde' and then run again 'pacman -S kde'.

Hint on update from previous Beta1:
please deinstall kdebase-config, it's replaced by kde-common.
If you get trouble with menus not appearing please deinstall kde first and 
then reinstall with new packages.

I'll start packaging RC 1 packages probably tomorrow when the tarballs are 
released to packagers. Expect them to appear in testing soon :)
