Alsa doesn't RELY on the hardware channels. It just defaults to it.

And deprecating ESD isn't about dependency on a certain DE. It's just
about getting rid of old buggy software in favour of newer solutions.

There's a very good reason E17 has absolutely NO plans to use esd...
