Odin,

Thanks for your note.

I did check for consistency of the running kernel, /usr/src, and /lib/modules and everything looks OK.

It's now running again and seems persistent over reboot.

My only clue is the location of the call to kdm.

I had placed it in /etc/inittab as some suggested last week. I've now removed it (calling xdm instead) and added a call to the 'module' kdm in rc.conf. Perhaps someone can explain why the location of the command whould cause/cure the behavior I've observed.

Thanks.

Tried compiling your own kernel? I did that, and it's working swell
(woha, nice word). Can't remember why I did it though. But I guess
I've got my reasons (think it was because I wanted a -ck patch) :]

Maybe you should run depmod? Have you checked everything is nice
with uname and ls /lib/modules? I always had a problem with Arch
because it doesn't run lilo for me, so I started up with an old
kernel whilst I thought I had a new one. And than I couldn't load any
modules anymore...

Me again... I'm perpetuating this thread single-handedly :-)

The problem has returned (after reboot) so it was not fixed. I can
insert the module if I change to the appropriate directory and 'insmod'
so it would seem that the system doesn't know where the drivers are.

I did upgrade the kernel to 2.6.11 last week. Is it possible that
something was not updated which would point the kernel to
/lib/modules/2.6.11,,?

Hi all,

As I said the other day, I'm new to Arch.

As of last night I can't get the modules I need to load.
This is pretty much a show stopper as I can't get on the network, run
graphics, etc.

The (unknown) change in my system must have occurred with yesterday's
updates.

Anyhow, /etc/rc.conf looks OK in the sense that all the modules are
listed in the MODULES array.

/etc/rc.sysinit runs OK and tries to load the modules it finds in
rc.conf but the kenel says the modules are not found.

Breaker, breaker!

Before posting this I got back into Arch to see if I could find some
more info. While I was running in console mode I decied to run
'vmware-config.pl' to update vmware for the new kernel. That worked
fine. I then, on a whim, ran /etc/rc.sysint and all the modules loaded!

So I'm a happy camper again but, I must admit, totally perplexed as to
why the vmware-config.pl step fised the problem.

Can anyone explain?

TIA.
