I think at least this one should be added to rc.sysinit, and the mplayer thing doesn't really appeal to the DIY rule, but rather to the "no-hassle and sensible defaults" rule (compare the sound stuff). mplayer does not work as good as it could without it, and there are no objections to it except the DIY one.
