off-topic section forum post, or did it on your blog and asked some
people to respond in comments. But people's private issues, especially
the personal ones, are just not proper in some places.
Heck just the fact that these places honestly are the only real "tech
support" for something like Arch is an example. Another is that, and
this is an example of where you need to understand what is proper where
(as I explained to you privately once), people don't subscribe to these
mailing lists for anything other than "General Discussion about Arch
Linux" they don't need over half a dozen messages about something they
never asked for thrown into their mailbox. IRC is a little more lax
about staying on-topic with general users, but thats because the
environment is less that of Mail and more like that of a public group
meeting. On IRC a key thing to remember is that when someone asks for
help, try to help them, or move your little side stories aside, I for
example always try to the best of my ability to answer people's
questions when they come into the IRC room, you don't need to take an
active roll, but realize that if someone asks a serious question, they
deserve a serious answer, even if you don't know them. My problem with
you was that you never seemed to time to figure out what was appropriate
and where, and just lacking overall tolerance and respect to others.
The entire time you ranted about how you hate swazo, Canada, and
Canadians, because you disagreed with a law the country passed about
allowing people to do something that harms no-one, at least thats my
recollection. That is wrong on so many levels: Generalizing against
international groups, especially in a multinational community like
Arch's, failing to respect other people's culture & standards, and
generally politics is something you really want to avoid.
The thing is, I didn't hate you, it was my issue with your attitude
towards things. The difference is that if I hate someone, thats an
overall detest for someone, if I have a problem with something, my
attitude toward that problem is dictated by it's current situation. If
you suddenly came on IRC one day and were perfectly appropriate,
respectful, and not acting out, that second my problem wouldn't be an
issue anymore. It was a silent disagreement about how you approached
IRC, forums, and the bug-tracker. I would stand-up for my point-of-view
if you challenged me about it, but otherwise it didn't matter. It's like
politics, I disagreed on how you did things, I didn't hate you. So yes,
if you came back with a respectful and understanding attitude I think
everyone would be glad to have you back and discussing in the forums and
IRC. People you know personally are traditionally much more prone to
generalized hate then IRC users becaues guess what, the only way we can
judge you is your words, where-as in real-life people generally can
judge you as a whole.
I think everyone was tolerant about the fact that you are still young.
People did show you courtesy and respect, you were young and so they
gave you some slack, it's important that you show the same respect and
tolerance back to them. People try to make you feel welcome, and you
should do the same to them. I don't think what I saw justified a ban,
but remember, I wasn't there when you were banned, if I read the logs
I'd change my mind (because I doubt the ops would ever ban someone
without solid reason first).
I doubt anyone really hates you, and this isn't anything that serious
(or is it? Nvm lol). And honestly, take it from me, some people online
might hate you eventually, but its defiantly not something to take too
seriously. I know there are actually hundreds of people I've run across
online that hate me because of how I dealt with arguments, flames,
people, etc. The key is not to get too emotionally attached to some of
this stuff, because thats where you can really be hurt.
