The libvgahw.a thing is over-optimized by GCC 4.0, which causes these problems. I'm currently packaging a new snapshot of gcc that should be fixed. For the matrox dualhead: you only need mga_hal. For the rest, you can just set your desktop to virtual desktop 2560x1024, turn on MergedFB and add some extra options for the 2nd head refreshrate.
