Ok, I added a section in the KDE Wiki that describes how to change the
dpi for KDM. I had a hard time searching for this and once I found it, I
thought it would be a good idea to add it.

This is is a very good hint if you have 96dpi resolution but i google a long
time to look for the best solution and i found two way to solve it. But at
first: This is only a suggestion and no criticism.

At second: If this all is in the wiki than give me a strong RTFM.-)

At least: Sorry, i have the long howtos only in german and not the url because
i use knowit for such things so i don't know where the hints comes from (url
or a hint in a newsgroup). Okay i try to translate the important things:

1. Perhaps it depends on your hardware or the xorg version but at this moment
a line in the org.conf in the monitor section with

DisplaySize 338 270

gives me here with a L70A TFT and a nvidia the best result. For this you don't
need the dpi option in kdm or startx.

url: http://www.mozilla.org/unix/dpi.html

2. It is not so easy to say what is the correct value of your dpi. First you
measure the dimension of your monitor (or look in the handbook) and then make
two calculations:

dpi = xres * 2,54 / width of the visible area in cm
dpi = yres * 2,54 / height of the visible area in cm

In my case with 1280x1024 it is 96 dpi but if you use at example 1024x768 you
will have another dpi value. I made this calclulation for a long time before
i switch to DisplaySize.

Sorry, i don't found an english howto.-(

So the only thing what i want to say is that perhaps it will be a good idea to
add the url of an english howto about this problem to find out what is your
personal value of the dpi.

See you, Attila

Good suggestions. However, by changing the correct display size (mine is 376x301) in xorg.conf I would get square DPI's, I would only get 86x86. I still wanted 96, so that is why I made the change to the startx and the kderc files to specify the dpi size..

Good information you posted though as that will solve some issues with out of whack fonts :)

Thanks!!!

Joe
