I haven`t looked at these PKGBUILDs, but the best way of solving this is
to make xmame to provide both xmame-sdl, and xmame-gl.
I`ve done something simular with the aranym package (in aur)
If that is implemented in the official pkgs then yes, but an AUR pkg
should not replicate a stock pkg :)
Agreed.
But if someone is making a "better" package, the maintainer should be
contacted, right?
Absolutely. Indeed I believe it is highly appropriate to develop these
alternatives and notify the developers when an appropriate solution is
created, this is in fact a major strength of the AUR. If Domenico's
xmame-xgl pkg is well recieved by the community then this builds a very
strong case for the creation of the combined pkg. Once this success has
been established a simple feature request on the bugtracker pointing out
the success will lead to results much faster.
It is important to note that the devs are very busy with libtool slay
and the gcc migration - minor pkg updates are very much on the back burner.

If I have some free time this weekend I`ll take a look at it, if not
anyone else do it.
