I decided to give software suspend another chance, and it seems like it decided to be nice to me. Here's a patch with software suspend 2 included. I've compiled and used it, and it works here.
If nobody has any big problems with this patch, I will include it in archck3 or 4. Please give it a shot, I have been able to suspend and resume without problems here, but I would like others to test it.
