Interesting! I don't have the screeching and squawking, just silence, but maybe some random manipulations with channels in "alsamixer" may do the trick. Thanks, I'll try that.

But what I can't figure out is why it all works if I just downgrade the kernel.

Not stupid at all! Good idea. But I tried that before and after the downgrade. Both "Master" and "PCM," the important channels, are not muted. Of course, "Line" and some other channels are muted but that makes no difference when running under kernel 2.6.12 where sound works correctly.

I understand, but I - a couple of of days ago - upgraded my girlfriend's arch linux and we also had some problems with sound and snd_emu10k1. There was no proper sound only some screeching and squeaking in the boxes. It helped to run alsaconf (what you aparently did) and then to pull and push the Kmix stuff. Unfortunately I can't tell you what lines should that be, because she did it by herself and I didn't notice that. The card she uses is a Soundblaster Live 5.1. Kernel is the newest one of Arch's current repo.
