This may not have anything to do with you problem, but I thought I'd mention it 
anyway.

FYI - on my server box (a several year old Dell Dimension) even though hwd 
reports that I should use the "snd_emu10k1" module, that's not actually 
correct.  A number of models of Dell machines ship with a special Sound Blaster 
card, built specifically for Dell, that uses a different chip set than the 
standard SB.  So on that machine, I have to use the "snd_emu10k1x" module 
instead.

Again, this may not be your issue (especially since your sound seems to work 
when you use an earlier version of the kernel/alsa modules) but I thought I'd 
mention it just in case.
