Well, actually, even i dont think its a good idea for providing compat libs, BUT, its a necessity .. a lot of commertial apps use the old gcc, for example. some versions of maya, mathematica and lots more.., so i strongly believe it is in the best interest of wider adoption of arch that we have to provide compat libraries.
