Hi, I also compile E17 by hand (but using ABS), and when doing my PKGBUILDs I 
compare them with the ones that Rensel makes (the TUR that put E17 on the 
AUR).  And If you check them, he adds this line to them:

find $startdir/pkg -name '*.la' -exec rm {} \;

And in that way he avoids this libtool problem.
Anyway, I recommend you to check all of his PKGBUILDS, to see what he does and 
what ./config options he uses.
