I had similar problem a while ago - I could not log through gdm to my 
GNOME desktop... I booted the system in single user mode - removed some 
daemons like mysqld that I had recently added to rc.conf and after that 
everything worked fine. Anyway I never understood what exactly cause the 
problem - maybe James Rayner is right...
