Subject: Re: [arch] X doesn't like my PS/2 optical mouse

By the way, I asked this in my previous message:

> 4) Take a look at the output from dmesg (or your /var/log/everything.log).  Are you seeing any error messages re: a serio device?  Particularly something along the lines of "bytes dropped" or something.  If so, please post it here.

Did you check that out and/or see anything like I described?

Sorry about forgetting to do that.  I think that for the test to be effective one has to do a fresh boot with the optical mouse connected, launch X, wiggle the mouse a bit, terminate X, and then examine the contents of the kernel ring buffer.  So, what happend is I put it off to do a fresh boot and then forgot.

Anyway, upon conducting the test, there was one interesting entry in the kernel ring buffer messages.  It was this:

psmouse.c: Exploer Mouse at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing away 3 bytes.

I suspect that that has something to do with the problem, although I have no idea what.  If you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.  Thanks.

Yep, that's what I thought.  That's the exact type of message I get when I have that mouse jumping problem.  (Only, as I mentioned, I have this problem when using a kvm switch.)

Try doing this:
1.  in your boot manager (e.g., grub) add this to the end of your vmlinuz line:  psmouse.proto=imps (e.g., "kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 psmouse.proto=imps vga=771 ro")
2.  reboot

See if that solves the problem.  When you google around on that error message, you see that that's the recommended solution to the KVM problems.  (Although it doesn't work for me.)

HTH,
