Dunno why this iso was unusable for you, but in the last day or so I tried a test install of "Underground Desktop" which uses arch as a core. The install was uneventful, and runs just fine on my 64bit AMD machine at work. Well, perhaps I should not say that the install for me was uneventful, but it has a "gotcha or two" in store for the user as it does NOT install anything other than a root user by default and immediately boots into a kdm prompt WITHOUT any virtual console access. <- Not insurmountable, but a little out of the ordinary too. Only four or so tweaks to a usable system though, and most of those are to just the rc.conf file along with one to the xorg.conf file to enable the aforementioned vc access and of course adding a non-root user and establishing them as part of the audio group.
