Hmm, a thought:
Does this seem like something bugworthy?  I don't know about you, but
e-d-s seems like it should be optional, the kind of component that
should be used if available but discarded if not.  (Especially with
the friggin' clock!)  If anyone else agrees, I'd be willing to post a
bug on GNOME about this; their lack of flexibility of this sort irks
me and fighting it in various and sundry ways often makes my todo
list. :)
