I can only report that I'm having a similar problem. It happens about
once per "session". It's all in X since other activities continue in the
background. I need to power cycle, and after that it generally works
just fine.

I'm also on an AMD processor (AMD Hammer Family processor - Model
Unknown).

As I mentioned I suspect X though. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller:
Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]: Unknown device 6330

I'm hoping the next version of X.org will be better... I just haven't
dared taking the plunge yet, waiting for it to leave [testing].
