Run lsmod and make sure the correct kernel module is being loaded for
your soundcard. Strangely enough, when I ran the updates to move to Xorg
7 for some reason my sound card kernel module stopped auto loading. I
ended up having to put the kernel module in the module list
in /etc/rc.conf

In my case the module is snd_intel8x0 - yours will likely be different.
