If you search the forums, you'll find several threads on this topic. http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=19279 is the least flamey of any of them. I am of the opinion that this is a waste of time. People need to just figure out how to use makepkg and be off. PKGBUILD's are an extended and controlled version of ./configure && make && make install. If you want a package from portage, just take the time to write a pkgbuild or dl it from the aur.
