The network profiles (as well as the "old" network settings from rc.conf) only 
support dhcp and
ifconfig. Almost any interface is configured that way. ppp devices need a 
special daemon to work
(pppd) and cannot be configured with the usual ifconfig-like utilities.

If you think this is useful, you can write a patch for netcfg that can start 
the ppp daemon with a
network profile and submit it here. But I doubt this is useful.
