thanks, Eric, for your helpfulness. I am using the standard pacman.conf here, which should be set to use the ftp.archlinux.org mirror. I've taken a look at the repository - seems like the db is updated for i686 all right, but just not for x86_64? mesa-apps is still in there, and in the db as well...
