I grabbed a LiveCD and used

# resierfsck --check /dev/system/var

The check said there was some corruption and to use --fix-missing. Fix 
missing didn't actually work, it just sat in an infinite loop repeating 
the same error message. I made a backup of the partition using DD and 
then ran a --rebuild-tree which has finally resolved the issue. Thanks 
very much for your help :)
