It is possible that you have some font packages installed on your
system, that have broken your font cache during upgrade.
Try to regenerate your font cache with these instructions:
  fc-cache -f > /dev/null
  mkfontscale /usr/share/fonts/TTF
  mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/TTF
