The problem is not TeX the problem is, which your links shows it too, that under Unix there is only TeX Live which is not so easy to package as tetex. I must say that at the beginning (with an atari-) ) i only have started using TeX because there was a distribution which i only have to install and not to compile by myself. This is the only difference to earlier and you be right because TeX itself will never die.
