As far as I know, it is not possible to convert any filesystem in place
(with the exception of ext2 -> ext3, and soon ext3 -> ext4). Your best
bet is to use an external hard drive to back up and restore the contents
of the partition. If you have a second computer running Linux on the
same LAN, copying the files to that computer using scp or nfs is also an
option.
