I've had similar problems - cause was incorrectly configured iptables - 
default ruleset is not for desktops. I added "-A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT" 
in /etc/iptables/iptables.rules and all become work

It may be not your case, though.

Try to uninstall all that uses X, X itself and all its packages, then 
install 'xorg', fonts, needed drivers and your desktop environment.
