FYI I had this problem, but the bug is actually in 0.9.8e. So the next release might cause the same incompatibility. I am using the 1-line patch at: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=412979#49

I found out that this problem was caused by the new version of openssl (0.9.8e). I downgraded openssl to 0.9.8d, and was able to mount the encfs directories; now I'm going to copy their content in some temporary place, upgrade openssl and create new encrypted directories.
