Not meaning to jump on Jason here, but his is simply the most recent post
in this thread (reply is easy).....

I would argue that the problem this is seeking to address, is a
speculative hypothesis at this point. That is, that adding a decimal to
the release number will result in less confusion about which version is
current in which architecture.

If documentation is present to the fact that -x changes are to the
pkgbuild only, and do not reflect a need to update or recompile
(difference between x64 and i686), then the 'problem' is reduced. End user
education is a key factor here.

Nothing reduces such user error in the decimal system proposed. Adding an
(-x.y) does not provides any mechanism to avoid the *same* user error we
have now. The numbers will still be "off", it will just be *more*
confusing and harder to provide easy distinction (in my opinion).

To me this seems to be a solution in search of a problem. Why add what
seems to me an arbitrary cosmetic that provides no perceivable benefit
(arguably more complexity) to the system?

Have we lost the KISS goal?

Maybe I just do not understand what this is aiming to fix, or how it is
going to go about fixing whatever that 'it' is...
